The Sinhala and Hindu people celebrate this festival. They get ready to spend this festival very happily. They clean their house and paint them, buy new cloths food and drinks. They prepare lot of sweetmeats and milk rice and ripe plantains to treat the relatives who come to visit them during the festive season.
On 13th of April they stop all the works during the inauspicious time and carry out religious observances. On 14th they kindled the hearth on auspicious time and prepare milk rice. They give the rice corn for Awrudu Kumaraya (the prince of the new year). After that the elder member of family feed food to all other. The children worship parents giving them a sheaf of betel. They bless them kindly. There after they go to visit their relations.Realations also come to their houses. Then they celebrate the new year by organizing “new year festival” with many games. Some of the games are pillow races, eating buns, and many others.
On 16th of April people go to the temple and participate for oil applying ceremony. That day they end Sinhala and Hindu new year very happily.
